JAKARTA: Following government restrictions in Indonesia, TikTok and YouTube have taken major action and deactivated more than 4.7 million accounts.

According to international media reports, after the Indonesian government imposed restrictions on social media usage for children under 16 years of age, the two major platforms collectively blocked millions of accounts.

The Indonesian government confirmed that TikTok removed around 4.1 million accounts, while YouTube disabled approximately 600,000 accounts belonging to underage users.

A government spokesperson said the action was taken to enforce local laws and protect children online. Under the regulations, accounts belonging to users under 16 are required to be deactivated.

Indonesia’s Communications Minister stated that the aim of the policy is to protect children from online harassment and social media addiction. He added that social media companies must strictly comply with national regulations.
