Torkham border still closed as tension between two sides continues

PESHAWAR: The Torkham trade route between Pakistan and Afghanistan remained closed for the 11th day on Tuesday as tension between security forces on both side could not be resolved.
According to customs officials, the closure of the Pak-Afghan Torkham trade route was causing a loss of $3 million per day.

Security sources said that the issue emerged after Pakistan’s objections to the Afghan side over the construction of structure at a disputed area on the Afghan side of the border. However, the exchange of firing by security forces on both sides had stopped.

They said that the personnel of government departments had already been transferred to Landikotal from the border, and security was on high alert at Torkham border crossing and outskirts. Additional forces were deployed on the Pak-Afghan border.

Moreover, trucks carrying goods along with travellers to Afghanistan from Pakistan side had been returned from the border by Pakistani authorities.
