Xi’s visit, his first to Washington in more than a decade, combined formal diplomacy with elaborate ceremony. Trump and first lady Melania Trump welcomed Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, at the White House, followed by military honors, bilateral discussions and a state dinner attended by senior officials and prominent business and technology leaders.

The discussions covered some of the most sensitive issues in the U.S.-China relationship, including trade, artificial intelligence, Taiwan, critical minerals and the conflict involving Iran. Both governments have sought greater communication while continuing to disagree over major strategic and economic questions.

AI becomes a major issue

Artificial intelligence featured prominently in the talks. Xi said the United States and China, as leading AI powers, have a responsibility to ensure that the technology remains under human control and serves public welfare. The two countries have been exploring ways to manage the risks created by increasingly powerful AI systems.

Taiwan remains a key point of tension

Taiwan was another major issue. Chinese state media reported that Xi urged Washington to oppose Taiwan independence and to handle the Taiwan issue cautiously. The White House did not immediately release a detailed account of the private discussions.

The United States has continued to emphasize the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, while China considers Taiwan a core sovereignty issue.

Trade and economic relations

Trade remains central to the relationship. Washington and Beijing have been working through earlier agreements involving tariffs, agricultural purchases, Boeing aircraft, investment and other economic issues, but progress has been uneven.

The summit therefore comes as both governments attempt to keep economic competition from escalating into a broader confrontation.

A day of ceremony and diplomacy

Beyond the closed-door talks, Xi's visit featured highly visible displays of diplomacy. Trump hosted a state dinner for the Chinese leader, bringing together government officials and business figures including technology executives.

Trump described his meeting with Xi as a “great meeting,” while both sides publicly emphasized the importance of maintaining communication and stable relations.

The talks did not immediately produce a major breakthrough on the most contentious issues. Instead, the meeting underscored the effort by Washington and Beijing to keep dialogue open despite continuing disagreements over trade, technology, Taiwan and broader strategic competition.
