According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll completed on August 17, only 33% of Americans approve of Trump’s performance, while 64% disapprove.
His approval rating has dropped from 35% earlier this month and now matches the lowest level recorded during his previous term in December 2017.
The survey found that 80% of Americans believe U.S. involvement in Iran will continue for an extended period. The figure rises to 87% among Democrats and stands at 71% among Republicans. Only 16% believe the conflict is likely to end within a few weeks.
Public support for the war also remains limited. Just one in five Americans said the conflict has been worth the cost, while only about half of Republicans expressed support for the war. Rising gasoline prices and disruptions to global oil supplies have added to economic concerns among U.S. households.
The political consequences could be significant ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. Democrats have gained an advantage over Republicans on economic issues, with voters increasingly trusting Democrats to handle inflation and the cost of living.
On immigration, Republicans still lead, but their advantage has narrowed sharply to just two percentage points, compared with a 26-point lead in January 2025.
The poll suggests that the prolonged Iran conflict, together with its economic impact, is creating a growing political challenge for Trump and his Republican allies as the midterm elections approach.
