WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump has taken a major U-turn regarding the decision to strike Iran, stating that his close advisors had persuaded him toward the action.
During a press conference in Florida, Trump said the situation with Iran had reached a “point of no return.” He added that after consultations with negotiator Steve Witkoff, advisor Jared Kushner, and Secretary of Defense Pat Hagstah, he became convinced that Iran was preparing to attack the United States.
Trump claimed that without a preemptive U.S. strike, Iran could have launched an attack within a week. He stated that U.S. strikes destroyed 51 Iranian naval vessels and targeted drone manufacturing facilities, resulting in an 83% reduction in Iranian drone attacks.
He further noted that the U.S. possesses low-cost defense interceptors capable of countering Iranian drone threats.
Trump warned Iran that any attempt to disrupt global oil supply or block the Strait of Hormuz would trigger a severe military response. He also suggested that easing certain oil-related sanctions could be considered to stabilize global energy markets.
While the conflict with Iran could end soon, Trump emphasized the need for Tehran to avoid escalating tensions.
He also mentioned ongoing investigations into reports of an attack on a girls’ school in Iran and expressed dissatisfaction with Iran’s new leadership, urging them to pursue peace.
