Speaking to reporters outside the White House, Trump said the US had “hit Iran very hard” and that further action remained possible.
Asked about the potential impact of the conflict on voters during the US midterm elections, Trump said some voters might support his actions because he was doing what he believed previous presidents should have done. However, he acknowledged that others might oppose the campaign, adding that military action came at a cost he had anticipated.
Trump reiterated that the United States could not allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons.
His remarks came after he said earlier that Washington was not holding talks with Tehran, although he expected the conflict to move towards some form of outcome soon. He has also accused Iran of pushing up oil prices ahead of the US midterm elections.
Meanwhile, a US newspaper report, citing an American official, said the United States and Israel had drawn up plans for possible renewed strikes against Iran after the midterm elections. The report said the two countries’ forces had stepped up preparations and exercises for potential operations.
According to the report, possible targets could include Iranian energy infrastructure, nuclear facilities, and missile and drone stockpiles.
