WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has responded to China’s 34pc tariffs on the United States with an additional 50pc taxes on goods from China.
The US president warned that if China does not withdraw the increase by tomorrow, the US will impose an additional 50pc tariff on China from April 9.
President Trump said in a statement released on his social media platform Truth Social that China had already adopted tactics such as record tariffs, non-monetary tariffs, illegal subsidies and currency manipulation, and now China has imposed a further 34pc retaliatory tariff.
“I have already warned that any country that imposes additional tariffs against the United States, it will immediately face more and harsher US tariffs.”
Trump said if China does not withdraw the 34pc tariff increase by Monday, April 8, the United States will impose an additional 50pc tariff on China from Tuesday, April 9.
The US president added that negotiations with China, for which he himself had made contact, would be terminated while the process of dialogue with other countries would be started immediately.
It should be noted that in response to the US tariffs, China has not only imposed tariffs on American products, but the Chinese Ministry of Commerce has also added 11 American companies to the list of “unreliable entities” so that they cannot do business in China.
China has also imposed strict restrictions on the export of seven minerals, including gadolinium and yttrium, which are important in the production of medical devices and electronics.
In addition, Chinese customs authorities have also banned the import of American chicken. The restrictions imposed by China will come into effect from April 10.
