BANNU: Two police personnel deployed on security duty with polio teams were martyred in Bannu on Tuesday, the area police said.

According to the police, the two policemen were providing protection to the polio teams who were administering drops to children in the Marian locality of Bannu when two armed men opened fire on them near Teri Ram.

The two policemen were shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital Bannu where they embraced martyrdom.

According to the police, the martyred policemen also opened fire on the attackers injuring one of them. The injured attacker succeeded to flee into a street and was later found dead.

Five policemen were martyred in a bomb blast in the Bajaur district of Khyber Pakthunkhwa early on Monday. Police said the personnel were going on security duty with polio teams when their vehicle was targetted in Mamund area.

Pakistan and Afghanistan are the only two countries in the world that have still failed to eliminate the crippling polio disease due to opposition by hardliners to administration of polio drops to children.
