UNITED NATIONS: UN Secretary-General António Guterres has sharply criticized Israel’s plan to take control of Gaza City, calling it a “dangerous escalation.”
UN spokesperson Stéphane Tremblay said the decision could worsen already devastating conditions for millions of Palestinians and further endanger lives, including those of remaining hostages.
She stressed that a sustainable resolution to the conflict is impossible without ending the illegal occupation and achieving a viable two-state solution, adding that Gaza must remain an integral part of a Palestinian state.
The remarks came after Israel’s security cabinet approved a plan to seize control of Gaza City. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Fox News that the goal is full military control of Gaza.
He claimed Israel does not intend to keep the territory permanently, but will establish a security zone before handing the area over to Arab forces.
