NEW YORK: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed profound sorrow over the tragic loss of lives following the devastating flash floods in Pakistan.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, Guterres reaffirmed the United Nations’ solidarity with those affected and emphasized that the UN stands ready to provide assistance if requested by the Pakistani authorities.
The floods have caused widespread destruction, and local authorities are coordinating rescue and relief efforts to support the affected communities.
Death Toll Exceeds 600
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reports that the death toll from the recent flash floods has surpassed 600, with over 300 fatalities in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province alone. The worst-hit district, Buner, has seen at least 274 deaths, with many more individuals still missing.
The floods have also resulted in significant property damage and displacement of residents. Rescue operations are ongoing, with authorities working to locate and assist those affected by the disaster.
