UN Chief Regrets US Decision to Withdraw from World Entities

NEW YORK: United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed regret over the United States’ decision to withdraw from a number of UN entities.

Aaccording to a statement issued on behalf of the Secretary-General by his spokesperson on Thursday, the UN chief was disappointed by the announcement made by the White House, stressing that assessed contributions to the UN’s regular and peacekeeping budgets are a legal obligation for all Member States under the UN Charter, including the United States.

The statement said the UN General Assembly approves these contributions and that compliance is mandatory for all members.

Despite the US decision, the Secretary-General affirmed that all United Nations entities would continue implementing their mandates as entrusted to them by Member States.

“The United Nations has a responsibility to deliver for those who depend on us,” the statement said, adding that the organization would continue to carry out its work with determination.
