UNITED NATIONS: The UN General Assembly today adopted a resolution enhancing the participation of the State of Palestine in its 80th session, with 145 member states voting in favor, 5 against, and 6 abstentions.
The resolution sets out procedures to facilitate Palestine’s “meaningful participation” in UN deliberations. It allows the submission of pre-recorded statements by the President of Palestine or other high-level representatives during the General Debate, high-level conferences, and other relevant meetings.
The measure also provides for in-person representation whenever possible.
The decision is viewed as a step toward greater inclusion of Palestine in the UN system, while stopping short of granting full membership.
