UNSC scrambles to discuss raging Palestine-Israel conflict

UN Secretary General says all diplomatic efforts are being made to avoid a wider conflagration.

NEW YORK: As the Israeli warplanes started targeting Palestinian civilians in retaliation to Hamas daredevil multi-pronged attacks on Israel, the international community called upon both the sides for restraint.

They also called on the warring parties not to target civilians. On the other hand, the UN Security Council is today holding an emergency meeting to discuss the conflict.

UN officials said they were in contact with all concerned to urge maximum restraint.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said all diplomatic efforts are being made to avoid a wider conflagration.

He said violence cannot provide a solution to the conflict and peace can be achieved only through negotiation that lead to a two-state solution.
