The US military described the operation as a “limited, precise action” against Iranian minelaying forces that posed an imminent threat to shipping in the strategic waterway.
A US official said the targeted launchers were located on Larak Island, although the military did not publicly provide further details.
Iran said it responded by launching ballistic missiles toward two US military bases in Jordan. Jordanian authorities later said eight missiles that entered its airspace had been intercepted.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed that an American MQ-9 Reaper drone was shot down over the Strait of Hormuz using air-defense missiles. Iranian media reported that the drone crashed into Gulf waters.
US President Donald Trump also said on social media that Iran’s major energy hub, Kharg Island, was being attacked, although he provided no further details and there were no independent reports confirming additional strikes on the island.
The latest developments come as Washington continues to apply economic pressure on Tehran in an effort to bring Iran back to negotiations. The exchange of attacks has raised fresh concerns over the security of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy route.
The situation remains fluid as both sides issue competing claims about the attacks and their aftermath.
