WASHINGTON: The trade dispute between the United States and India has escalated, with the US canceling the trade talks scheduled with India this month.
According to Indian media, the US trade delegation has called off its planned visit to India from August 25 to 29, leaving the trade negotiations stalled.
The tensions stem from India’s continued purchase of oil from Russia, despite warnings from the United States about potential additional tariffs. Following India’s decision to continue importing Russian oil, the US imposed an additional 25% tariff, bringing the total US tariffs on India to 50%.
The White House stated that imposing extra duties on Indian imports was “appropriate and necessary” because India is importing Russian oil both directly and indirectly.
Earlier, the US Treasury Secretary had warned that if talks between Trump and Putin fail, India could face tariffs exceeding the current 50%.
