UNITED NATIONS: A crucial session of the United Nations Security Council is scheduled to take place this week, but Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will be absent after the United States refused to grant him a visa, according to international media reports.
The meeting will focus on “upholding the principles of the United Nations Charter and strengthening the central global system of the United Nations.”
It comes at a time of heightened tensions in the Middle East and strained relations between Iran and the United States, drawing significant global attention.
The session will be held under the presidency of China, with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi set to chair the proceedings. Chinese officials have described the meeting as particularly important amid increasing pressure on the international system and growing geopolitical instability.
Pakistan will be represented at the meeting by Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, who is also expected to hold discussions with world leaders and senior UN officials on the sidelines.
Iran’s official news agency reported that Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei confirmed Araghchi’s inability to travel to New York due to visa issues.
Diplomatic observers noted that although Iran is not currently a member of the Security Council, Araghchi had been invited as a special participant. His absence has effectively ruled out any potential direct engagement between senior Iranian and US officials during the meeting.
Chinese authorities have emphasized that the session will aim to reinforce the role of the United Nations, promote multilateral diplomacy, and encourage dialogue-driven solutions to global conflicts.
Diplomatic sources further indicated that Pakistan is expected to support China’s position and underline the importance of resolving international disputes through peaceful negotiations in line with the UN Charter.
Meanwhile, there has been no final confirmation regarding the participation of US Senator Marco Rubio in the meeting.
