US has long history of partnership with Pakistan: Blome

Ambassador says that his country supports Pakistan's working with the IMF.

ISLAMABAD: US Ambassador Donald Blome has said that his country and Pakistan have a very long history of partnership and cooperation in different fields.

Speaking at a seminar on Pakistan-US relations in Islamabad, the ambassador said that the US attaches importance to its ties with Pakistan. Pakistan has great potential for development especially it has a very energetic youth population.

He said that the US had continued support to Pakistan in different sectors such as education, adding Pakistan had made important contribution in the war on terrorism and also suffered a lot.

He said the private sector of the US wanted to take full advantage of the potential and investment opportunities in Pakistan. The two countries also have seen an increase in bilateral trade which last year crossed nine billion dollars mark, he added.

Ambassador Blome said that the US was providing financial assistance to Pakistan to upgrade the Mangla Dam with the replacement of its turbines with new ones in order to increase power production and overcome the energy crisis.

Moreover, American firms are making an investment of 250 million dollars in clean drinking water projects abd 85 million dollars investment on efforts to minimize malnutrition in Pakistan, he added.

The ambassador also said that both the US and Pakistan were supporting millions of Afghan snd other refugees in their efforts for settlement in safe areas.
