According to Axios, citing three sources familiar with the discussions, neither Washington nor Tehran appeared willing to back down from its demands, raising concerns over the possibility of renewed military confrontation between the two countries.
The report said a Qatari mediator held several hours of talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his team in New York.
The discussions also included a two-page proposal presented by Qatar. The proposal reportedly called for an end to the blockade of Iran and included demands for concrete concessions regarding Tehran’s nuclear programme.
According to Axios, the White House had remained hopeful about progress in the talks but reportedly believes Washington does not need to make significant compromises under the current circumstances.
The report also said US President Donald Trump could consider ordering major military action against Iran after the US midterm elections if diplomatic efforts fail to produce an agreement.
