ISLAMABAD: The president of the United States of America did not give any response to a letter sent by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif about the release of Dr Afia Siddiqui from a US jail.

This information was revealed by an official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Islamabad High Court on Friday.

The court was hearing a petition filed by Fouzia Siddiqui, sister of the Dr Afia Siddiqui who is languishing in an American jail for abetting terrorism.

During the proceedings, Justice Sardar Ijaz remarked that as an independent state the US could cancel the visa granted to Dr Fouzia and it can also refuse a visa to even the prime minister but such issues should be taken up at the level of foreign offices.

The Foreign Office official said that the embassy of Pakistan in the US had made arrangements for a meeting with Dr Afia in the jail but the Pakistani delegation did not reach there on time.

Dr Afia’s sister said that when the chief executive of a country sends a letter to the head of government or state of another country a response is definitely received. On this the Foreign Office official said that the prime minister had written a letter to the US president but received no response.

The court adjourned further hearing on the petition till January 13.
