WASHINGTON: The US Senate has rejected a War Powers resolution that sought to force President Donald Trump to halt ongoing military operations against Iran without congressional authorization.
The resolution was defeated by a 53–47 vote, effectively giving President Trump greater freedom to continue military actions against Iran.
The measure was introduced by Tim Kaine and supported by 26 other senators. It aimed to require the president to obtain approval from Congress before launching further military operations against Iran.
During the vote, Rand Paul was the only Republican senator who supported the resolution. Among Democrats, John Fetterman voted against it.
The Senate session saw heated debate between lawmakers. Democratic senators argued that Congress must retain authority over decisions related to war and warned that allowing the president to act without oversight could set a dangerous precedent.
Senator Adam Schiff said the resolution was not only about stopping the war but also about maintaining a constitutional balance of power and preventing unchecked presidential authority.
However, Republican senators defended the president’s military actions, stating they were necessary to protect U.S. national security.
With the resolution’s failure, President Trump now has broader political and legal space to continue military operations against Iran.
