WASHINGTON: Several Democratic senators have sharply criticized President Donald Trump over the ongoing war against Iran, calling it illegal and based on false premises.
Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren condemned the Trump administration’s actions, stating that the war against Iran is unlawful and founded on misleading claims.
Speaking after attending a classified intelligence briefing in the US Senate, Warren said she was left with the impression that the Trump administration lacks a clear strategy regarding Iran. She described the situation as “worse than imagined,” adding that she is now even more concerned than before.
Senate Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer also voiced concerns following a briefing by the Intelligence Committee. He said the justification for the war keeps changing.
“First it was regime change, then nuclear weapons, then the missile program, and then self-defense,” Schumer said, arguing that the shifting narrative demonstrates a lack of coherent planning.
Senator Warren further stated that the war was initiated without any imminent threat from Iran to the United States and is resulting in the loss of precious lives. She pledged to take every possible step to bring the conflict to an end.
Meanwhile, Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal expressed concern that the United States may be considering deploying ground troops to Iran, a move he warned could further escalate tensions in the region.
Senator Bernie Sanders also strongly criticized Trump, alleging that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sought billions of dollars from the United States to continue military operations in Gaza and desired a war with Iran as well. Sanders claimed that Trump had fulfilled that objective.
