Spokesperson says Pakistan's army chief held talks with defense officials in Washington.

WASHINGTON: The United States once again has said that it will continue supporting the holding of free and fair elections in Pakistan.

At a news briefing in the State Department, a spokesman said holding of the elections was imperative for promotion of democracy and the US government was working with Pakistan to ensure the elections are held in a free abd transparent manner.

However, he made it clear once again that the US S had no inclination to support any particular political party in Pakistan, adding it was for the people of the country to elect their government.

The spokesperson said that Pakistan was an important non-NATO ally of the US and Washington would continue collaboration with Islamabad in political, diplomatic and defense fields.

He said that the army chief of Pakistan was in the US and held talks with authorities on bilateral cooperation in defense field.
