Woman behind Lahore college rape allegation in police custody

Shifted to Lahore for investigation, suspect says she made fake video to get social media viewership, according to police.

LAHORE: Police in Lahore have arrested a woman who they say was involved in spreading a fake rape allegation in a private college in Lahore recently.

The police said that the suspected woman had been arrested from Karachi and brought to Lahore and was being investigated. The police identified the woman as Sara Khan.

During initial questioning, the woman told police that she had made a video portraying herself as mother of a first-year female student at the private college. She said that in the video she falsely stated that her daughter had been raped by a security guard in the basement of the college. She said that she did all this to get viewership on social media.

A week ago, students from different branches of Punjab Group of Colleges took to the streets demanding action against the rape of a first-year female student. The students alleged that the girl was admitted in a hospital after being raped in the basement of the college.

However, the police said that CCTV footage inspection had shown no such incident and the allegation was fake. Moreover, there was no complainant and no traces of the victim or her parents.

The students however continued their protest and alleged that the police and college administration had deleted the CCTV footage of the incident. Later, the protest spread to other cities especially Rawalpindi where  students damaged the buildings and  properties of the private colleges. Over 300 students were arrested in Rawalpindi after which their protest subsided.

Speaking at a press conference, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz said that the PTI party was involved in provoking students to protest on the basis of a fake allegation of rape.
