ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed Muhammad Wasim as chairman of the national cricket team selection committee and Saleem Yousuf as head of the cricket committee. Both officials will continue to work until the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.
Chairman Pakistan Cricket Board Ehsan Mani approved the appointment of Muhammad Waseem as chairman of the national cricket team selection committee and Saleem Yousuf as head of the cricket committee. The final round of online interviews of candidates was completed on Thursday and Friday. The first task for Muhammad Waseem is to announce the national cricket team for the 2 Tests and 3 T20 matches against South Africa in mid-January.
According to a statement issued by the PCB, no change has been made in the composition of the national cricket team selection committee. Only the head coaches of the first XI teams of all cricket associations will be included in the selection panel. Saleem Yousuf last worked with the PCB as a member of the selection committee. He was a member of the selection committee of the national cricket team from 2013 to 2015. His panel includes Ali Naqvi, a representative of match officials, and Umar Gul, a representative of domestic cricketers. Women cricketers’ representative Urooj Mumtaz, former cricketers and media representative Wasim Akram.
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief executive Wasim Khan has said that he is happy with the appointment of two best people as chairman of the selection committee and head of the cricket committee. Both the officials have been appointed for three years. And Saleem Yousuf has a vast knowledge of cricket and both of them are well-received in cricket circles. Both these former cricketers will work in line with the five-year strategy of the PCB.
The Chief Executive of the PCB said that the appointment of Mohammad Waseem is also a result of our policy under which we want to hone the talents of our talented cricketers. Mohammad Waseem used to work as a match referee, selector and coach. He said that Saleem Yousuf was a wise and brave cricketer who was well aware of the quality of domestic and international cricket.
Muhammad Waseem says he was lucky to have the opportunity to play cricket with talented players and now he will serve Pakistan in a new role, he is hopeful of doing his best in this new role. He said that there is no shortage of talent in Pakistan and Pakistan has to play more cricket in the year 2021. He will set short term goals as well as long term goals in this period. We will not shy away from making tough decisions.
On the decision of the PCB, Saleem Yousuf said that it would be an honor to chair a cricket committee consisting of eminent and knowledgeable people of cricket. My job is to make the best recommendations in the light of their knowledge and present it to the Chairman PCB. He said that he is looking forward to serve Pakistan cricket in this new role with the help of his teammates.
