Experts from Commonwealth countries discuss gender equality

ISLAMABAD: A two-day international workshop on advancing gender equality in legislation started here in which speakers from Commonwealth countries highlighted existing gaps and hindrances in ensuring gender equality.

Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP) Chairperson Zainab Gimba said that the participants from member states discussed and reviewed the international standards and legal frameworks towards the promotion of gender-sensitive legislation.
She stressed the need to collectively review and evaluate the best regional and international practices for incorporating into the gender-sensitive legislation into the existing legislative frameworks and learn from each other’s experiences and legislative drafting skills.
She lauded provincial and federal assemblies and women parliamentarians of Pakistan for their immense contributions towards gender-sensitive legislation.
She said that there was a need to enhance the capacity of women parliamentarians worldwide through such workshops.
She also underlined the need to compare and contrast the existing laws and identify and address the problems in incorporating gender equality into the existing frameworks.
