ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has described July 5, 1977 as the darkest day in Pakistan’s democratic history.

He said July 5th marked the overthrow of the public mandate, the Constitution and parliamentary democracy.

In a statement, Bilawal said the military takeover sought to silence the voice of the people, but the sacrifices of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Benazir Bhutto and countless pro-democracy workers proved that the people’s sovereignty and the truth could not be defeated.

He said that even 49 years later, the party remains committed to defending the supremacy of the Constitution, protecting the sanctity of the vote, parliamentary democracy and the people’s right to rule.

Bilawal added that the true tribute to the martyrs is to reject every form of dictatorship and continue building a united, democratic and progressive Pakistan.
