Canada announces 35pc cut in admissions for foreign students

Canadian govt says there are housing shortage to accommodate foreign students.

OTTAWA: The Canadian government has announced a 35 percent reduction in admissions offered to foreign students in its educational institutions.

The decision was made due to rising shortage in housing units to accommodate foreign students in the country.

According to the decision, 35pc less seats would be offered to foreign students in the Canadian educational institutions in the year 2024.

Overall, 364,000 foreign students would be given admission in the educational institutions in Canada this year.

Canada’s immigration minister Mark Miller said that proper arrangements would be put in place soon to provide suitable facilities in the educational institutions in Canada.

He said the reduction in admissions for foreign students was a temporary arrangement for only two years after which housing issues would be resolved. However, the new move will not affect foreign students currently enrolled in Canada.

Similarly, the policy will also be not applicable on students pursuing their masters and PhD degrees in Canada

According to the immigration minister, the new policy has come to force on January 22, 2024.

A large number of students from Pakistan will also be affected by the policy as Pakistan is among countries from where thousands of students get enrolled in the educational institutions in Canada each year.
