A technology company has analyzed Google search data and identified the most commonly misspelled words in the United States during the first five months of the year.
According to analysis conducted by Unscramblerer.com, data from January 1 to May 18, 2026, was reviewed.
Researchers used Google Trends search queries such as “how do you spell” and “how to spell,” and cross-checked the data with the marketing and SEO platform Ahrefs to determine the frequency of each query.
The analysis found that the most frequently searched misspelled word was “bougie,” followed by “favorite,” “through,” “business,” “tomorrow,” “because,” “definitely,” “beautiful,” “niece,” and “separate.”
Researchers also examined the most commonly misspelled words by state across the US. The findings showed variations including “school” in Florida, “color” in Colorado, “ukulele” in Minnesota, “diamond” in Oregon, and “recycle” in Texas.
