Imran arrested after conviction in Toshakhana case

Former prime minister shifted to Attock and locked up in district jail there.

ISLAMABAD: The trial court here on Saturday declared PTI Chairman Imran Khan guilty of “corrupt practices” in the Toshakhana case and sentenced him to three years in prison.

Following the verdict in Islamabad, the Punjab police arrested the former prime minister from his Zaman Park house in Lahore. Later in the evening, he was shifted to Attock and locked up in the district jail there.

In a pre-recorded video message, Imran Khan asked the party workers and supporters to take to the streets and hold peaceful protests.

The court in Islamabad also imposed a fine of Rs100,000 on the PTI chief. The court also disqualified him from holding any public office for five years.

On Friday, the Islamabad High Court had directed the trial court to hear Imran’s application for maintainability of the criminal proceedings.

During the hearing today, Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADSJ) Humayun Dilawar ruled that charges against the former prime minister in the case were proven.

“Imran Khan deliberately submitted fake details to the Election Commission of Pakistan and is found guilty of corrupt practices,” he stated and sent the PTI chief to jail for three years under Section 174 of the Election Act.

ADSJ Dilawar also directed that a copy of the order should be sent to the Islamabad police chief for the execution of the court orders.

“The court finds its more than convincing that the complainant (ECP) had provided confidence-inspiring, well-knitted and corroborated evidence, and so the charge against the accused has successfully been proven that the accused has committed offence of corrupt practices by making and publishing false statements/declaration in respect of assets acquired by way of gifts from Toshakhana and disposed of during years 2018-2019 and 2019-2020,” Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADSJ) Humayun Dilawar said in a short order.

The judge said that Imran also provided an “incorrect declaration” in the Form-B — the statement of assets and liabilities — submitted to the ECP for the year 2020-2021.

It  said that the PTI chief was convicted under Section 174 (Offence of corrupt practices) of the Election Act and sentenced to three years in prison.

ADSJ Dilawar also directed that a copy of the order, along with the arrest warrant, should be sent to the Islamabad police chief for execution. After today’s verdict, Imran technically stands disqualified from holding any public office for five years under Article 63(1)(h) of the Constitution.
