WASHINGTON: Several Indian companies are facing scrutiny in the United States over alleged fraud in H-1B and permanent residency visa programmes, according to reports by Indian media.
According to The Indian Express, US authorities have launched a major investigation into suspected irregularities involving H-1B and permanent residency (PERM) visa applications.
The report said Indian IT services company Cognizant is among the firms under investigation.
The inquiry is reportedly being conducted by a task force led by US Vice President J.D. Vance. Investigators are examining allegations that fraudulent visa applications were used to exploit foreign workers while disadvantaging American employees.
According to The Indian Express, the investigation has uncovered alleged schemes involving fake visa applications and labour-related violations.
US Department of Labor Inspector General Anthony D’Esposito said subpoenas have been issued to companies under investigation as authorities examine multiple aspects of the alleged visa fraud.
The reported investigation has intensified scrutiny of Indian companies’ overseas employment practices and could have broader implications for the H-1B visa programme if the allegations are substantiated.
