UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Asim Iftikhar Ahmad has described the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as a “strong and resolute diplomatic victory,” saying it continues to provide a framework for dialogue between the United States and Iran.
Addressing an emergency session of the UN Security Council, he said the agreement reflects Pakistan’s longstanding position that regional conflicts can only be resolved through diplomacy and negotiations.
He said Pakistan’s mediation efforts were driven by its commitment to regional and global peace, aiming to save lives, reduce tensions and facilitate structured negotiations leading towards sustained understanding and a lasting agreement.
Ambassador Ahmad noted Pakistan’s leadership had remained engaged with negotiating parties, regional partners, and other countries to ensure diplomatic continuity under the agreement. He said the fact that talks are ongoing and parties remain engaged at the negotiating table is a positive development.
He added that Pakistan continues to facilitate dialogue and confidence-building measures to prevent escalation and maintain communication channels between the parties, stressing that keeping diplomatic avenues open remains essential for regional stability.
The envoy said Pakistan condemns any attacks in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and expressed solidarity with Bahrain and Kuwait, warning that further escalation could have serious consequences for regional and international peace and security.
He thanked Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, Egypt, and China for supporting Pakistan’s mediation efforts and reaffirmed that dialogue remains the only sustainable path towards lasting peace in the region.
