KARACHI: Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, head of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan, has said if the government added to the burden of the public by not providing relief in the federal budget and reducing fuel prices, a countrywide strike and protest will be launched.
Addressing workers in Karachi’s Orangi area, he said the budget has placed an additional burden on the public, adding that failure to cut petrol prices would lead to a “wheel-jam strike” across the country.
He urged citizens to unite with his party to secure their rights, stating that issues such as electricity, water, and gas shortages could only be resolved through collective public action.
The JI chief also alleged that his party’s electoral mandate in Orangi Town was “stolen,” claiming the matter has been taken to the courts. He emphasized that voters must not only cast ballots but also protect their mandate.
Criticizing local governance, he accused what he termed a “mafia” of depriving citizens of basic services, including transport and utilities. He also raised concerns over the condition of public healthcare facilities, alleging that staff salaries remain unpaid.
Hafiz Naeem further said that increasing fuel prices and what he called “unjust taxes” are worsening economic conditions, while independent power producers (IPPs) continue to benefit.
He concluded by reiterating that if relief is not provided in the budget—particularly through reduced petrol prices—his party would announce a countrywide shutdown strike.
