Minimum employment age at 16 to discourage child labor

LAHORE: In order to discourage child labour in the province, the Punjab government has decided to fix the minimum employment age at  minimum of 16 years.

At a meeting chaired by Punjab minister for labour Faisal Ayub Khokhar it was also decided to form a task force to ensure the implementation of the minimum wage of Rs37000 announced by the provincial government.

Speaking to the participants of the meeting, the labour minister said that the government would also make it sure that the wages are paid to the workers through their bank accounts. He said that cells were also being established to receive complaints again those who violated the labour laws.

The minister also said that steps would be taken to ensure that there is no child labour in the province. He said that the law would also the amended to stop people and industrial units from engaging children as labours.

According to the minister, the minimum age for employment in the province has been fixed at 16 and engaging children less than 16 years of age would be against the law.

It may be mentioned here that under section 3 of article 11 of the constitution of Pakistan, the minimum age for labour is 14.
