PPP files response in Supreme Court in Bhutto reference

Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP) Mansoor Usman Awan on Tuesday submitted details of 102 accused who were in military custody in connection with the May 9 riots of May 9.

ISLAMABAD: The PPP has submitted its reply to the Supreme Court in connection with a presidential reference filed over 12 years ago against the hanging of its founder and former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in 1979.

The written reply has been filed in the apex court on behalf of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Chitral by his lawyer Farooq H. Naek.

Excerpts from different books and an interview of former chief justice of Pakistan Naseem Hassan Shah have been added in the reference.

A nine-member bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa will take up the reference on January 8.

The reference was filed in the apex court by the then PPP government through the president Asif Ali Zardari in 2011.

The apex court started hearing the reference after forming an 11-member bench headed by former chief justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry.

The bench held six hearings of the reference from January 2012 to Nov 2012, but could not issue a judgement.
