Students saved Bangladesh, says Nobel laureate

Muhammad Yunus says he feels very happy upon return to his country.

DHAKA: Bangladesh’s Nobel laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus has arrived in Dhaka from Paris to take over as head of the interim government which is yet to be formed.

Talking to media after arriving at the Dhaka International Airport, the Nobel laureate said that he was very happy after coming back to the country. He said students have saved Bangladesh. He was of the opinion that now he would be working for the development of the country and promotion of democracy.

It may be noted here that Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajid resigned and fled to India on August 5, after students protesting over the quota system in government jobs announced to march on Dhaka, asking her to quit.

The students had been protesting for the last over one month and even did not stop their protest after the Supreme Court of Bangladesh scrapped the quota a system. Hundreds of people were killed during the clashes between the students and supporters of the government. 

After the Prime Minister fled the country the students announced that they would not accept any government supported by the army. They demanded there the Assembly should be dissolved and an interim government must be formed headed by the Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus. 

The Nobel laureate said that after formation of the government he would be working to hold free and fair elections in the country. 

Meanwhile, life has come back to the normality across Bangladesh with educational institutions and government offices open and traffic restored on roads.
