Suspect in Murder of PAF Group Captain Arrested: IGP

ISLAMABAD: Inspector General (IG) Islamabad Police Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi announced that the suspect involved in the killing of a Pakistan Air Force Group Captain has been arrested within nine hours of the incident.

Addressing a press conference at the Press Information Department (PID), the IG said the incident occurred at around 11:21 a.m., describing it as a serious challenge for law enforcement that was immediately taken up for investigation.

According to police, the suspect, identified as Muhammad Saad Abbasi, allegedly attempted to forcibly take a woman named Nimra with him. The woman and the suspect reportedly worked at a cash-and-carry store in the Melody area of Islamabad and had been seen together on two prior occasions.

The IG stated that the Group Captain intervened after witnessing the situation and attempted to stop the suspect. As the situation escalated, the suspect, who was on a motorcycle, opened fire, resulting in the officer’s death.

Police said the victim, described as a brave officer of the Pakistan Air Force, was martyred while trying to protect the woman from abduction.

The investigation involved 11 police teams, analysis of 275 Safe City surveillance feeds, and the use of artificial intelligence-based tools to trace the suspect’s movements. Authorities said modern digital forensics significantly accelerated the investigation.

The suspect was arrested within nine hours of the incident from Islamabad. Police also revealed that he was allegedly planning to flee the country and had a Skyways bus ticket in his possession. His mobile phone had reportedly been switched off to avoid tracking. The IG further stated that the suspect is originally from Abbottabad.
