WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed concern over Israeli strikes on Beirut, warning that the escalation could jeopardize a near-final peace agreement and urging all parties to reduce tensions.

Trump said the attack on Beirut “should not have happened” and called on all sides to exercise restraint in order to improve the situation on the ground.

In a statement posted on social media, he acknowledged Israel’s right to defend itself against threats but noted that the action prompting the response was limited in scope, with no reported casualties or injuries.

He further emphasized that ongoing peace efforts and negotiations should not be disrupted, saying a peace deal was close that could help bring stability to Lebanon and the broader region.

The U.S. president also called on both Hezbollah and Israel to halt further attacks, stressing that no additional strikes should occur and that the current peace process must be protected.
