ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has launched a modern capacity-building programme in collaboration with the United Kingdom to enhance the country’s mineral sector, officials said at an inauguration ceremony in Islamabad.

The event was attended by Minister for Energy Ali Pervaiz Malik, British High Commissioner Jane Marriott, senior officials of the Geological Survey of Pakistan, and other stakeholders.

Under the initiative, the Resources and Energy Mapping Integration and Technical (REMIT) programme will run from April to July 2026 at advanced geoscience research laboratories. The programme aims to strengthen the technical capacity of the Geological Survey of Pakistan in line with international standards.

The training will cover key areas including digital geological surveys, remote sensing, geochemical and geophysical analysis, and geographic information systems (GIS).

Officials said the project, worth approximately $500,000, is expected to improve data quality and reduce risks associated with mineral exploration.

Speaking on the occasion, Energy Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik emphasized the need to strengthen geoscientific capabilities to fully utilize Pakistan’s mineral potential.

British High Commissioner Jane Marriott noted that reliable and modern data is essential for effective utilization of mineral resources.

Advisor to the energy minister Dr. Hamid Ashraf said the programme would enable better assessment of mineral resources and ensure surveys meet international standards.
