PESHAWAR: Scholars from different schools of thought here on Monday pledged to continue playing their role for national unity, harmony and peace.

Addressing a press conference at Peshawar Press Club organized by International Research Council for Religious Affairs (IRCRA) in connection with Muharram, they urged people to shun their differences and play their role in the promotion of peace and harmony.

Molana Muhammad Jan, Molana Yousaf shah, Molana Qari Roohullah, Molana Mairajuddin and Allama Abid Hussain shed light on Muharram and said their aim was to promote peace and unity among Muslims. They said scholars had always played their role in conducting Muharram and other religious gatherings peacefully.

The ulema urged each and every individual to refrain from participating in any movement or activity that seeks to undermine the state or perpetuate harmful sectarian divisions. They reaffirmed the fundamental right of all Islamic schools of thought to freely propagate their beliefs and ideologies, but emphasized that this right must be exercised in a manner that does not infringe upon the rights of others or promote harmful and hateful rhetoric.

The ulema said any form of hate speech or accusatory language directed towards any group will not be tolerated, and that the government bears the responsibility of ensuring the safety and security of all citizens and scholars. In a show of unity and solidarity, the scholars pledged to stand together with security agencies and law enforcement to promote peace, harmony and stability in the country.

They said by issuing the joint statement the scholars aimed to send a strong message of unity and peaceful coexistence, and to encourage all individuals to work towards building a more inclusive and harmonious society where everyone can thrive and feel safe.

Tahmeed Jan, Director of IRCRA, urged religious scholars of all schools of thought to publicize the message of peace in Muharram. He said ulema had always played an exemplary role in the establishment of peace and we expect the same from them this time as well.
