US president approached for release of Dr Afia, court told

Additional Attorney General says letter written to US president by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif.

ISLAMABAD: The government of Pakistan has written a letter to the US President seeking the release of Dr Afia Siddiqui on humanitarian grounds.

This was stated before the Islamabad High Court during the hearing of a petition filed by Dr Fozia Siddiqui, the sister of Dr Afia who has been jailed for 86 years in United States of America for abetting terrorism abd trying to kill US soldiers while in custody in Afghanistan.

When Justice Ijaz Ishaq of the IHC took up the petition of Dr Fozia, Additional Attorney General Munawer Iqbal told the court that a letter seeking remission of Dr Afia’s sentence had been written.

He said that the letter was written by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif to US President Joe Biden.

Dr Fozia Siddiqui had earlier met her sister in a US jail and later stated that she was in a very deplorable condition. She had repeated called upon the government to take steps for her release.

There have also been campaigns by since religious parties and groups for the release of the jailed doctor in the US.
