GENEVA: The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has appointed Saadia Zahidi, a Lahore-born economist and senior executive at the World Economic Forum (WEF), as its next Director General, making her the first woman to lead the global airline industry’s trade association.
Zahidi will officially assume the role on November 1, 2026, following the departure of current Director General Willie Walsh, who is stepping down on July 31. During the three-month transition period, IATA Chief Financial Officer Sandrine Le Bihan will serve as Acting Director General.
Currently serving as a Managing Director at the World Economic Forum, Zahidi will become IATA’s ninth Director General. Her appointment marks a departure from tradition, as the organization has historically been led by former airline chief executives or aviation industry board members.
IATA’s board cited her extensive leadership experience in global economics, policy, and international cooperation as a key strength.
In a statement following her appointment, Zahidi said she looks forward to working with airlines, governments, and industry partners to strengthen innovation, resilience, and sustainable growth across the aviation sector.
“I look forward to building on IATA’s strong foundation, ensuring that aviation continues to connect the world while embracing innovation, strengthening resilience, and advancing sustainable development,” she said.
Zahidi assumes leadership at a challenging time for the aviation industry, which is facing geopolitical uncertainty, economic pressures, and rising fuel costs. Ongoing conflicts in the Middle East have contributed to higher oil prices, placing significant financial strain on many airlines worldwide.
She is also expected to play a central role in advancing the industry’s environmental agenda.
Airlines have committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, although progress remains constrained by the limited availability of sustainable aviation fuel and the need for more fuel-efficient aircraft.
In addition to her work at the WEF, Zahidi is the author of “Fifty Million Rising,” a book examining the growing participation of women in the workforce across the Muslim world.
Her academic credentials include a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Smith College, an MPhil in International Economics from the Graduate Institute in Geneva and a Master of Public Administration (MPA) from Harvard University.
