ISLAMABAD: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has urged the government to take immediate steps toward a peaceful and lasting resolution to the ongoing situation in Kashmir.
In a video message, Fazlur Rehman said the protest led by the Kashmir Public Action Committee had continued for more than two months. He said the committee approached him on June 5, when tensions escalated and talks between the government and the committee reached an impasse, and formally requested him to play a mediatory role.
Fazlur Rehman said he accepted the request and remained in contact with the committee through JUI-AJK leader Maulana Saeed Yousuf Khan and Sardar Kamran Azam Khan. However, he claimed that the government did not give adequate importance to his mediation efforts.
He appealed to the Kashmir Public Action Committee to avoid taking any major step and allow more time for efforts aimed at resolving the issue. He said the people of Kashmir had shown remarkable patience despite casualties and suffering.
The JUI-F chief also expressed concern that the movement was spreading beyond Kashmir, with its impact being felt in different parts of Pakistan and among the Kashmiri diaspora, particularly in Europe.
He urged the government and state institutions to recognise the seriousness of the situation and focus on reconciliation rather than allowing further bloodshed.
Fazlur Rehman said he hoped a fair and sustainable solution could be reached through dialogue and appealed to all sides to give peace efforts another chance.
