Pakistan’s Fatima Zahra Wins Bronze at Commonwealth Games

GLASGOW: Pakistan’s boxer Fatima Zahra has won a bronze medal in the women’s 60kg boxing category at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Fatima Zahra was defeated by Canada’s Maria in the semifinal. The Canadian boxer led 4-1 after the opening round before the referee stopped the bout in the second round.

Fatima had reached the semifinals after defeating New Zealand’s Jordan Wilson in the quarterfinal.

Her bronze medal marks Pakistan’s first medal in Commonwealth Games boxing since 2014 and makes Fatima Zahra the first Pakistani woman to win a boxing medal at the Commonwealth Games.

Speaking after her semifinal defeat, Fatima said the bronze was an important achievement for Pakistani women’s boxing, although the team had hoped to win gold.

“This is our first step,” she said, adding that the medal showed Pakistani women boxers were moving in the right direction after a long journey.

The women’s 60kg final will feature India’s Priya against Canada’s Marie Almahdiya on Saturday.
