NEW YORK: The New York City Police Department (NYPD) has seized 3,259 firearms from city streets since the beginning of 2026, Police Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch announced Tuesday.
According to the NYPD, the seizures include 199 ghost guns — unserialized and difficult-to-trace firearms. Brooklyn recorded the highest number of seizures with 915, followed by the Bronx with 782, Manhattan with 764, Queens with 605 and Staten Island with 193.
The announcement came on the fifth anniversary of the Gun Violence Strategies Partnership (GVSP), a multi-agency initiative involving more than 30 federal, state and local law-enforcement agencies. The partnership focuses on identifying repeat violent offenders, sharing intelligence and removing illegal firearms from communities.
Commissioner Tisch said the seizure of more than 3,000 guns was part of the NYPD’s broader precision-policing strategy and credited officers and law-enforcement partners for helping reduce gun violence across the city.
The NYPD said the first seven months of 2026 saw 381 shooting incidents, 462 shooting victims and 149 murders, all record lows for the corresponding period. Compared with the same period in 2025, shooting incidents fell 7.5%, shooting victims declined 5.5%, while murders dropped 22.8%.
July also recorded a significant decline, with 59 shooting incidents compared with 75 in July 2025, a 21.3% decrease. The department said shooting incidents in July were down 75% compared with July 2020.
The NYPD also reported substantial reductions in violent crime in public housing and said it had carried out 25 gang-related takedowns so far this year.
Under its Summer Violence Reduction Plan, the department has deployed up to 3,800 officers across 72 violence-reduction zones. As of August 10, major crime in those areas during deployment hours was down 24.8%, while shooting incidents fell 39.3% and shooting victims declined 32.1%.
