NEW DELHI: Concern has intensified in India’s Gujarat state following an outbreak of the Chandipura virus, with authorities confirming 23 deaths among patients infected with the disease.
According to media reports, the Gujarat Health Department said in its latest update issued on Saturday that 217 suspected cases of Chandipura virus infection were reported across the state between June 30 and August 8. Of these, 39 cases have so far been confirmed, while 23 deaths have been recorded among the confirmed patients.
Health authorities said laboratory testing of most suspected cases has been completed. Reports for 208 of the 217 samples have been received, while results for the remaining nine samples are still awaited.
Following the detection of cases, the state health authorities intensified preventive measures in affected areas. These measures included door-to-door health surveys and large-scale spraying of insecticides aimed at controlling the spread of the virus and its suspected vector.
The number of suspected infections reportedly increased by mid-July, with cases being detected in several districts across Gujarat. Health officials have continued surveillance and monitoring efforts as authorities work to identify suspected patients and prevent further transmission.
Experts say Chandipura virus is primarily transmitted through sandflies and can cause severe encephalitis, particularly among children. The infection can progress rapidly and may become life-threatening, making early detection, medical evaluation and timely treatment crucial.
The outbreak has raised particular concern because children are considered especially vulnerable to severe complications associated with the virus. Health authorities are therefore focusing on early identification of suspected cases, vector control and public awareness in affected communities.
Officials have urged residents in affected areas to cooperate with health teams conducting household surveys and spraying campaigns. Continued surveillance is also being maintained to track the emergence of new cases and assess the extent of the outbreak.
The latest figures have prompted increased attention to preventive measures as Gujarat authorities seek to contain the outbreak and reduce the risk of further fatalities.
