Ramazan package to cover 100,000 families: minister

Food packages are being delivered to poor families at their doorsteps and so far 1,500,000 have been handed over across Punjab.

LAHORE: Information Minister Punjab Uzma Bukhari has said that the distribution of Rahamazan packages has started across Punjab and will continue till the 20th of the holy month.

Addressing a press conference in Lahore, the minister said that the Ramazan package was being supplied to over 100,000 families at their doorsteps from the first of the holy month under the government’s plan to provide relief to the deserving people.

Ms Bukhari said that the food packages were being handed over to deserving people by using data of Benazir Income Support Program and so far over 1,550,000 packages have been delivered to the poor families at their doorsteps.

Ms Bukhari added that on the direction of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz a ban has been imposed on supply of onions and bananas from Punjab to other provinces and action was also being taken against hoarders to stabilize prices.  She said that Sasta Ramazan bazaars set up in the province were also providing essential food items to consumers at controlled rates.

However, a visit to markets in different areas of Punjab showed that prices had been jacked up by retailers and fruits and vegetables were selling at double rates than the pre-Ramazan time. Moreover, there was no check seen on quality of fruits and vegetables.

The masses have demanded that the government should tight he noose around the shopkeepers and vendors as well as the suppliers to bring down the prices and provide relief to the masses as a whole instead of sending food items to a few families. They said that the record-breaking inflation has badly affected all class of society.
