GILGIT: The first case of alleged electoral fraud has been registered ahead of the 2026 elections in Gilgit-Baltistan, raising concerns about the integrity of the upcoming polls.

According to police sources, the case was filed at a police station in Chilas, located in the Diamer district. The First Information Report (FIR) names a candidate from the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party, identified as Khush Muhammad, who is also reportedly related to former chief minister Gulbar Khan.

The complaint alleges that the accused used a forged official stamp to prepare fake ballot-related documents. It is further claimed that these documents were submitted along with a copy of a citizen’s national identity card, suggesting an attempt to manipulate the voting process.

Police officials confirmed that the investigation into the fake documents is ongoing, emphasizing that no individual is above the law. Authorities have pledged strict action against anyone found involved in forgery or electoral malpractice.

The development comes as Gilgit-Baltistan prepares for general elections scheduled for June 7, 2026. The incident has prompted calls for heightened vigilance to ensure transparency and fairness in the electoral process.
