LONDON: The first preview performance of The Mad King, a new stage production based on the world of Game of Thrones, was cancelled just hours before it was due to begin at the Royal Shakespeare Company’s (RSC) Royal Shakespeare Theatre.
The RSC apologised to audiences and said the decision to cancel the performance had been difficult. The company attributed the cancellation to unexpected delays during the preparation of the large-scale production, saying the creative team needed additional time before presenting the show to the public.
The theatre company confirmed that all affected ticket holders would receive a full refund, including fees, automatically.
The RSC said the cancellation would not affect the production’s scheduled opening night on August 8, which remains on track. The next preview is expected to take place on July 28, while the production is scheduled to run until September 5, 2026.
Based on the works of author George R. R. Martin, The Mad King is a world-premiere stage production set decades before the events depicted in the Game of Thrones television series.
The story begins with the famous Tournament at Harrenhal, set shortly before Robert’s Rebellion, and introduces several significant characters who have not previously appeared on screen or in the earlier adaptations.
Despite the unexpected cancellation, organisers said preparations are continuing for the production’s planned opening night.
