ISLAMABAD: The government has initiated key measures to increase electricity generation in response to rising demand and an anticipated power shortfall during the upcoming summer season, according to official sources.
The Power Division has formally written to the Petroleum Division seeking urgent arrangements for the supply of 400 million cubic feet per day (MMCFD) of gas to ensure uninterrupted electricity production.
Officials said the request has been made in view of increasing heat intensity, which is expected to significantly raise electricity demand across the country. They warned that without immediate action, the power shortfall could worsen in the coming weeks.
Sources further noted that liquefied natural gas (LNG)-based power plants, which have a combined generation capacity of around 6,000 megawatts, are considered essential for maintaining supply stability. Failure to activate these plants, they said, could force a shift toward more expensive fuels such as diesel.
The Power Division has also prepared demand and supply projections for the coming weeks and informed relevant stakeholders, including K-Electric, about LNG requirements.
Officials added that the Petroleum Division has been directed to make immediate arrangements for LNG cargoes from Qatar to ensure continuous power generation and to avoid additional pressure on electricity tariffs, which could rise further through monthly fuel adjustments.
