ISLAMABAD: Minister for Law Azam Nazir Tarar has said that the federal government was working on introducing a law to regulate the use of social media in the country.
In a statement issued here, the federal minister said that the government acknowledges the importance of freedom of expression but there should be some checks and rules and regulations about the use of social media.
He said the government believed that in order to promote healthy debate and criticism and dessiminate correct information there should be a law. In other countries using social media for propaganda and spreading disinformation leads to action.
The minister said guidelines would be introduced for social media users to ensure digital rights and checking objectionable materials on social media.
About the closure of social media platform of X, such issues were not limited to Pakistan rather developed nations have also restricted many sites. The United States has recently made a law to ban TikTok.
The minister also said that the PDM government led by the PML-N had constituted a committee on social media but further work was stopped after end of its tenure and formation of the caretaker government.
